The Ambitious Vision for Rakuten STAY
Rakuten STAY is Rakuten’s venture into creating a new vacation rental model, benefiting from Rakuten’s leading position on the Japanese market and Asia in general. Part of the site’s model involves owning managing and operating its inventory, in Japan, but with a global expansion as well, be it private villas or apartments, on top of the existing marketplace with 100,000 vacation rental listings.
Ambitious expansion Targets
The ambitious plan is to expand to 10,000 owned units, ranging from high-end private villas to apartment stays.
Rakuten plans to integrate e-commerce services where guests purchase immediately via QR codes. Guests access Rakuten’s entertainment offerings like Music and Books. Aside from water, every service is powered by Rakuten’s ecosystem, including energy solutions like solar power that the company is exploring.
The company’s mission today is to build Rakuten STAY into “a new kind of vacation rental model which will be unmanned by using technology to increase operational efficiencies”.
Ota believes the concept will resonate in the modern world. Now, people feel safer staying in places that don’t have a lot of people, are unmanned, and spacious. That’s the future: no humans in these types of private accommodation.”
