As is the entrance of <strong>new players<\/strong> in the market, like hotel chains partnering with or acquiring short-term rental businesses. Vacation rental <strong>technology companies<\/strong> are also going through mergers and acquisitions which serve to expand market share, increase global reach and respond to new market demands.&nbsp;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the <strong>top 7 M&amp;As in the short-term rental industry<\/strong> over the last few months.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-guestready-acquires-bnblord\">1. GuestReady acquires BnBLord<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This April, Europe saw an ambitious vacation rental rollup when Switzerland-based vacation rental management company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guestready.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GuestReady <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2019\/04\/11\/guestready-acquires-bnblord-in-european-vacation-rental-rollup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its Parisian counterpart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnblord.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BnBLord<\/a>. GuestReady did not disclose the amount.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acquisition served to expand GuestReady\u2019s portfolio to over 2,000 properties and launch the startup towards becoming Europe\u2019s largest vacation rental provider.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company started its growth via acquisitions in 2018 when it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2018\/12\/airbnb-management-startup-guestready-acquires-oporto-city-flats-and-we-stay-in-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took over<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the portfolio of Portuguese property manager Oporto City Flats and Paris-based We Stay.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-oyo-rooms-acquires-leisure-group\">2. OYO Rooms acquires @Leisure Group<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian budget hotel booking startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyorooms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OYO<\/a> has invested \u20ac360 million in its vacation rental business with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phocuswire.com\/OYO-acquires-Leisure-Group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquisition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Amsterdam-based @Leisure Group.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@Leisure Group has more than 30,000 professionally managed properties in Europe now taken over by OYO, under the new brand OYO Vacation Homes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OYO\u2019s break into the European accommodation market may signal the first of many steps that the company will take to seize opportunities outside of its home market. The company has also made its first US purchase, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/companies\/news\/softbank-backed-oyo-known-for-budget-stays-to-rebrand-hooters-hotel-in-vegas-1566561488306.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hooters Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. OYO is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/small-biz\/startups\/newsbuzz\/oyo-manages-more-rooms-in-china-than-in-india\/articleshow\/66725906.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to manage more rooms in China than in its basecamp, India.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2013 and valued at $10 billion, OYO is the world\u2019s third-largest chain of hotels, managed vacation rental properties and workspaces.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep an eye on them: they\u2019re moving quickly and rapidly expanding globally!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-airbnb-acquires-hoteltonight\">3. Airbnb acquires HotelTonight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the industry matures and the lines between hotels and vacation rentals blur, it\u2019s not just hotels that are moving into vacation rentals \u2013 the opposite tendency can also be observed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Airbnb<\/a> made its biggest purchase to date. The vacation rental giant dived headfirst into the hotel space by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/04\/15\/airbnb-officially-owns-hoteltonight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquiring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoteltonight.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HotelTonight<\/a>, a last-minute boutique hotel booking platform.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reportedly, Airbnb spent over $400 million on the deal, however, the company has not confirmed the amount.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airbnb\u2019s intention to cover more ground is clear. The company is casting its net wider and wider, fishing for new sources of revenue to add to its core business \u2013 a strategy that started with adding Experiences to Airbnb\u2019s offerings.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This acquisition signals Airbnb\u2019s move towards becoming a global conglomerate as it gears up for an imminent IPO.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-altido-is-created-through-a-merger\">4. Altido is created through a merger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, a new vacation rental brand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stayaltido.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Altido<\/a> brand was created from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2019\/05\/15\/consolidation-sweeps-european-short-term-rental-managers-with-altido-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">merger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of four leading European short-term rental property management companies: UK-based BnbBuddy and The London Residents Club, Hintown in Italy and RentExperience in Portugal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altido brings together the marketing, management and operations of over 1,700 properties across 21 European destinations. Its portfolio includes a diverse range of distinctive private rentals, serviced apartments, apart-hotels and guesthouses.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This merger shows that property managers see an opportunity in joining forces and taking a bigger bite of the market together. GSV initiates VR technology rollup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vacation rental technology companies are not exempt from the pressure to unite assets and grow as quickly and steadily as possible.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tennessee-based private equity firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatersumventures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greater Sum Ventures<\/a> (GSV) has initiated the biggest rollup of tech companies to date, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vrmintel.com\/gsv-initiates-large-technology-rollup-in-the-vacation-rental-industry-including-liverez-streamline-vrm-bluetent-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquiring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> companies like<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streamline Vacation Rental Software, Bizcor, Bluetent, Rental Guardian, Virtual Resort Manager (VRM), and LiveRez one after the other.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to VRMIntel, GSV plans to sell off the new technology group in under a year. Vacasa acquires Wyndham Vacation Rentals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making waves in vacation rental mergers and acquisitions this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vacasa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vacasa<\/a>, one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rentalsunited.com\/blog\/vacation-rental-property-managers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world\u2019s largest vacation rental management companies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2019\/vacasa-will-pay-162m-acquire-wyndham-vacation-rentals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyndhamvacationrentals.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wyndham Vacation Rentals<\/a> from Wyndham Destinations for $162 million.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acquisition, announced this July, <strong>doubles<\/strong> Vacasa\u2019s inventory to more than 23,000 homes, making them the largest property management service provider in North America by revenue. The transaction is set to close this fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wyndham Destinations <a href=\"https:\/\/skift.com\/2019\/07\/30\/vacasa-to-acquire-wyndham-vacation-rentals-for-162-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decided<\/a> to sell its vacation rental business in order to focus on its vacation ownership and exchange, or timeshare business.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deal is a huge step for Vacasa, a company that we\u2019re convinced we\u2019ll hear more about in the future.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare to <a href=\"https:\/\/rentalsunited.com\/blog\/short-term-rental-crowdfunding-campaigns\/\">Crowdfunding Trends<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-expedia-group-acquires-canadastays\">7. Expedia Group acquires CanadaStays<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After nearly four years of strategic partnership, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Expedia<\/a> has fully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phocuswire.com\/expedia-group-acquires-canadastays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acquired<\/a>&nbsp;vacation rental marketplace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadastays.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CanadaStays<\/a> in order to strengthen the company\u2019s presence in Canada. The amount remains undisclosed and CanadaStays will be added to the VRBO marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 2008, CanadaStays and has the largest inventory of Canadian properties in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expedia has been growing incessantly in the past couple of years: they also <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/10\/26\/expedia-acquires-pillow-and-apartmentjet-to-conquer-the-short-term-rental-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acquired<\/a> VC-backed startups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pillow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pillow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apartmentjet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ApartmentJet <\/a>in the fall of 2018.
