Alternative Vacation Rental Listing Sites

We expect your marketing mix is already filled with OTAs and niche websites but what about alternative vacation rental listing sites like Wholesalers and Metasearches? We give you the low down on these two categories and insights into which are currently successful. Read on to find out what other options there are to boost the distribution of your vacation rentals.

A. Vacation Rental Metasearches

What are they?
A metasearch is a large platform that uses other search engines to produce its own results. Metasearch platforms bring together quotes from different listing websites and display them all in their own page. Instead of visiting multiple websites, customers visit just one and have a good and quick overview of everything related to a search.

Google is very interested in vacation rental inventory for their search results and has already taken serious steps with a beta program. This move by the tech giant is expected to change the way guests behave and disrupt the vacation rental industry.

Difference between Metasearches & OTAs?
OTAs list vacation rentals and sell them through their own website and network. An OTA has the possibility to offer customers special combinations when booking holiday homes, such as car rentals and airfares. For a metasearch, this isn’t the case. A metasearch will list properties but will redirect visitors to book directly by the service provider that can also be an OTA.

How to advertise on Vacation Rental Metasearches?
While Metasearches may already feature your properties via any of the booking platforms you’re on, you should also try and get your own property pages listed. A channel manager like Rentals United creates direct booking pages for your all listings and submits them on the metasearches (providing you agree to it!) meaning you’ll pay the metasearch commission instead of the OTA commission and you will be the merchant of record.

With a Rentals United Account you’ll have access to 3 Metasearches:

1. Kayak

Kayak Vacation rental metasearch
Kayak searches other sites to show travelers all the information they need to book the right holiday home, flight, hotel or car rental. They have a considerable portfolio of listing sites such as Momondo, Swoodoo, Cheapflights, Mundi and Checkfelix. Besides their portfolio, Kayak also offer a variety of tools and features such as Kayak Trips, price forecasts and the Kayak App. Their strongest market is the USA and they have an average of 34.1 million views per month.

2. Hometogo Metasearch

On average they have 2,4 million views a month where people can search through the offers of 250 providers in over 200 countries. B. Wholesalers

What are they?
Wholesalers are platforms that distribute to various types of suppliers: travel operators, vacation rental providers, airlines, hotels, car hiring and OTAs etc, and sell their products to their own network, often with discounted pricing.

Difference from OTA’s
Most Wholesalers do not have their own website where they would list their inventory and are not able to cater for individual property managers or owners.

How to get listed?
Most Wholesalers work with technology providers like Rentals United, therefore in order to be listed you need to have an account with a channel manager. The wholesaler will distribute the properties to its network of travel agencies and tour operators that will thereon get them in front of future guests.

With a Rentals United Account you’ll have access to 2 Wholesalers:
